I am not supposed to be biased when doing these comparison reviews, but
I promise I will make a concerted effort to remain as disinterested in
this article as possible.
As a gauge of how well I do to remain unbiased, can you please do me a
favor - comment below which watch you think is my favorite.
Ok so here goes:
Both watches carry a very similar aesthetic as aviation themed watches. There is a reason that I call such watches 'aviation themed' and not just aviation watches or aviator watches;
that reason is that I don't think that the vast majority are actually
used while piloting an aircraft (maybe once upon a time, but certainly
not today).
The Orient ER2A005Y and the Hamilton H64715885 are both crafted from
stainless steel – even though it doesn't explicitly say so, I believe
them to be of the 316L ilk.
The Orient is brushed, which is a look I much rather for these types of
watches, while the Hamilton is both polished and brushed. The bezel on the Hamilton is rounded, which to me looks a bit better than the flattened, monotone bezel on the Orient.
The main crown is ridged on both models, but the Hamilton watch has a
crown guard that seems to lift off of the case, giving it a very
streamlined shape.
The straps on both models are brown, but in my opinion the rich look of
the alligator texture and the white contrast stitching on the Hamilton
beats the Barenia leather look on the Orient. Naturally, both straps are secured with stainless steel ardillon buckles. Size-wise the Orient measures 42mm across, while the Hamilton is oversized at 45mm. Despite the difference in the dimensions of the diameter, the case height on both models come in at 12mm.
The dial on the Orient is beige, which I find gives the watch a vintage look much like a Bell & Ross. The dial color on the Hamilton is grey, which looks fantastic with the brown leather. The dial on the Hamilton features applied rhodium toned Arabic numerals for the minutes scale. On an inner ring is the hour chapter. The prominent sword shaped hands are also rhodium toned and coated with lume for legibility.
The attributes on the Orient are similarly set up like the Hamilton,
but with a couple exceptions: the markers are printed not applied, and
the elements use black steel.
At the 3 position is a day of the week and a date aperture, whereas the
Orient timepiece only has a date window at that position.
Another major difference are the crystals used: the Orient has a
mineral crystal, while the Hamilton features a sapphire crystal.
For those that are familiar with these two brands, it is common
knowledge that the Hamilton is Swiss made, and the Orient is Japanese
made.
However, the Orient ER2A005Y, and the Hamilton H64715885 both carry a
self-winding mechanical movement – calibers 48743, and ETA 2836-2
respectively. These splendid calibers can be seen through the exhibition casebacks that can be found on either model. Lastly, there is the water resistance to consider.
The Orient carries a 100 meters water resistance, as opposed to the 200
meters water resistance that the Hamilton is equipped with.
Oh yeah, there is one more thing to think about – the price. Well here is where things get a bit interesting. Now the Hamilton in my opinion is the superior watch but its price point is significantly higher than that of the Orient.
The cost of the Hamilton H64715885 is $643.94 (down from $995), while
the Orient ER2A005Y is priced at $142.90 (down from $295). Quite a disparity there, isn't there? Well I believe that for the price you are getting better bang for the buck with the Orient. Conversely, if you can afford the Hamilton, I say “Why not”. Simply because to me it has better functionality.
In any case, which ever watch you choose, whether it is based on
functionality or pricing, you can rest assured that Discount Watch Store
